Why is womens sexual health generally deteriorating...and what to do about it.
Womens sexual health - libido is a Latin word that simply means desire, lust and sex drive. Womens sexual health and experiencing low sex drive usually means also experiencing water retention, irregular or heavy periods, depression, fibrocystic breasts and wrinkly skin. All of these symptoms are indicative of hormone imbalance and progesterone deficiency.
Sexual health in women also declines because of the following factors:
• Women are often exposed to environmental pollutants and toxins.
• Low DHEA and testosterone levels.
• Stress is another important factor.
• Excess alcohol and depression.
• Poor nutrition and obesity, which can affect energy levels, hormone imbalance and self-image as well as womens sex health.
• Emotional and psychological reasons that have never been resolved (relationship and marriage problems or sexual abuse).
• Women often do nothing to stop the deterioration and make themselves better.
• Hormonal imbalance (progesterone deficiency is a major problem for most men and women). But it can be solved with bio-identical progesterone supplementation.
Most people in our society, men included, are exposed to xenoestrogens (pollutants and chemicals), and very often we don't see the immediate consequences that these chemicals have on our reproductive, adrenal and immune systems.
In today's environment in the U.S. and industrialized countries, we are exposed to excess estrogen.
This happens through exposure to synthetic estrogen and progestin, pesticides, herbicides, preservatives, plastics, industrial waste, car exhaust, soaps, glues, cosmetic ingredients, gasoline, diesel fuel, detergents, and carpeting and paneling inside the home.
So, for example, avoid storing your food in plastic containers if possible, because the petrochemical plastic goes into the food - and then into you. And do not use plastic containers to microwave your food. Plastics are made from petrochemicals (xenoestrogens) that generally have a very potent estrogen-like activity in the body and thus are toxic.
And if possible, switch from petroleum-based cleaning products to natural cleaning products that will reduce your exposure to the petrochemical compounds found in regular household cleaning products. In addition to excess estrogen, womens sexual health is related to falling levels of progesterone in the body.
FALLING LEVELS OF PROGESTERONE...
Progesterone is produced by the female body at ovulation.
And womens sex health issues are specifically related to the menstrual cycle. Driven by progesterone and estrogen production, normal womens sexual health involves a feeling in the woman that she wants to have sexual relations at a time when it's most likely to result in pregnancy.
So - if you have lower levels of progesterone in your body, it stands to reason that you will have less feelings of well-being nor desire. Womens sexual health declines.
Also, testosterone is one of the hormones responsible for womens sexual health. The ovaries and the adrenal glands are responsible for maintaining adequate levels of testosterone in women.
The levels of testosterone decline as we get older, but this hormone declines the most at menopause. Normally women make only about one tenth the amount of testosterone that men do.
In many cases, low sex drive can be caused by thyroid deficiency and estrogen dominance (which means you need to increase your progesterone levels in the body by using natural progesterone supplementation).
Progesterone levels greatly decrease to nearly zero by the time menopause fully arrives. Estrogen only falls 40 to 60 percent. That means hormone levels are decreasing from about age 35 on up.
Just to be clear, estrogen and progesterone balance AND oppose each other! EACH of these hormones has a role to play in everyday life. But to have one WITHOUT the other to "balance" it - or to "oppose" it - is to invite trouble.
It is this hormone imbalance that causes premenopause and menopause symptoms and so many problems including declining womens sexual health.
Be sure you understand the health consequences of estrogen dominance and hormone imbalance. In other words, womens sexual health is related to the moment of ovulation - AND progesterone production.
As a woman ages and ovulation FAILS TO OCCUR with increasing frequency, progesterone is produced on a less frequent basis and the woman begins to experience progesterone deficiency.
Progesterone affects womens sexual health and libido, besides being the hormone in the female body that is responsible for fertility. It’s perfectly natural for a woman to be sexually active throughout her life. And there’s a great deal of evidence that sexual activity is good for your health.
Steroid Hormones function in the following way:
CHOLESTEROL in the body gets converted into ---> PREGNENOLONE, and the pregnenolone gets converted into ---> PROGESTERONE. The body then uses progesterone to generate the other hormones such as estrogens (estridiol, estrone and estriol), testosterone and corticosteroids.
When progesterone levels are low in the body, the ovaries produce estrogen and testosterone by using very inefficient methods.
This is why between the ages of 30 to 50, women start experiencing all kinds of premenopause and menopause symptoms because of anovulatory cycles (this means you have menstruation but no ovulation). And when you don't ovulate, your body produces very little progesterone.
Hormonal imbalance and progesterone deficiency can be a major causes of women's poor sexual health. Progesterone is not a sex hormone, but it is very important to the brain and spinal cord. Also, progesterone is the precursor of testosterone and corticosteroids.
Progesterone is concentrated in brain cells to levels 20 times higher than that of blood serum levels. This alone suggests that progesterone in brain cells must have great importance and purpose to womens sexual health.
Progesterone is the real missing ingredient for increasing vitality, enhancing libido (sexual desire) as well as helping you with sleep disturbances. For supporting womens sexual health, consider using natural progesterone supplementation.
If you are using natural progesterone supplementation for at least six months and still have low sex drive, or you don't see any improvement, you may want to consider checking your DHEA and testosterone levels. Go to the hormone testing section here.
If you have balanced your hormones and you are still experiencing low libido, you may want to try a small amount of natural testosterone.
Testosterone deficiency can result in diminished desire and ability to become aroused, insensitivity of the clitoris and nipples and difficulty reaching orgasm.
Testosterone is only available by prescription. Make sure you only use natural testosterone and you can use it in a form of a cream or lozenges. It can be bought or compounded in most pharmacies.
The best dose for natural testosterone seems to be in the range of 0.5 to 2 mg in the morning. The synthetic version (methyltestosterone) can have powerful side effects.
Estrogen is not the primary sex drive hormone in women. Natural Progesterone is! If you want to use natural estrogen cream (estriol), you should only use it if you are experiencing hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, urinary tract infections and you want to maintain younger looking skin.

Dr. John R. Lee says that most women who are losing interest in sex are ALSO experiencing water retention, depression, irregular or heavy periods and fibrocystic breasts. And what this means is they are deficient in progesterone.
To take estrogen replacement for the purpose of restoring womens sexual health and libido does not work. Estrogen does not restore sex drive. Only progesterone positively affects womens sexual health and libido!
Progesterone deficiency causes these signs or symptoms. For example, the failure to ovulate means that the body doesn't make progesterone that cycle, while estrogen continues to be produced.
Dr. Lee explains that once supplementation with natural progesterone was started, his women patients happily reported that their sex drive returned! And how bad can THAT BE!!!
For improving womens sexual health and increasing your sex drive, consider taking the online hormonal health test because you may be experiencing hormone imbalance symptoms.
Your individual symptoms can tell you what you need to do. Take the womens health test here.
