Learn more about breast cancer awareness and the antioxidants to prevent breast cancer.
Breast cancer awareness and breast cancer affects women of many ages, ethnic groups, and all socioeconomic groups. The first stage of any cancer is called initiation and it occurs with the damage and modification of the genetic material of the normal cell.
This alteration and damage is caused by a carcinogen which can be a hormone, a chemical, a virus, radiation, trauma or a combination of any of these factors.
There seems to be a connection between cancer and WHEN the DNA of a cell gets permanently damaged.
This stage can begin because as a teenager you were exposed to pesticides, for example, and you perhaps started taking birth control pills.
Later during your twenties you worked for your father's painting business and you were exposed to solvents, adhesives, glues and paints.
In your 30's and 40's, you got yearly mammograms and other X rays, you were still taking birth control pills, smoked cigarettes and you started taking synthetic hormone replacement therapy. All these events will generate several "insults" by carcinogens to the DNA of a normal cell.
The second stage of cancer is called promotion. This stage is defined when the tumor cell population starts growing and interfering with the normal workings of the body.
According to Harvard-trained family physician Dr. John R. Lee in his book What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Breast Cancer, "the human body contains approximately 64 trillion cells.
A drop of blood contains 3,000 to 5,000 white blood cells and 5 million red blood cells. If a single healthy cell in a breast becomes a cancer cell, it usually takes 8 to 12 years for this cell to multiply into a detectable tumor".
Another breast cancer awareness issue is that when first detected by mammogram, it may take another year or two to increase in size, to be detectable by palpation or by hand.
The third and last stage of cancer is called progressive. The tumors grow in size at this stage and they can invade surrounding organs, tissues, lymphatic system and blood vessels.
