Alcoholism signs and symptoms that indicate alcohol may be a problem...

The alcoholism signs and symptoms can vary among different people. Although usually there are common alcoholism signs and symptoms that are easily identified as those of an alcoholic.

Here are common symptoms that may indicate alcoholism:

• 1- Becoming upset when confronted about drinking.

• 2- Consuming alcohol daily is usually a sign of alcohol addiction.

• 3- Finding an excuse to drink.

• 4- Drinking alone.

• 5- Not eating enough food can be a way for an alcoholic to become more inebriated from the alcohol itself.

• 6- Hiding their alcohol consumption can be one of the alcoholism signs and symptoms and this behavior raises a valid question - why are they hiding their behavior? Typically, they are ashamed of their drinking and hide their consumption in an attempt not to be found out.

• 7- Having morning chills or shakiness is one of the common alcoholism signs and symptoms.

• 8- Experiencing nausea that is caused by excessive drinking.

• 9- Neglecting his/her appearance and not taking care of oneself in an effort to have more time to drink.

•10- Becoming highly emotional or even violent due to their alcohol consumption.

While alcoholism has no known cause, there are contributing factors that are related. Having a parent or parents that drink too much can put the person more at risk.

The person may drink to find relief from stress at work or home or from the stress caused by depression or anxiety. There can be social pressure to drink with friends or business acquaintances.

There is no real cure for alcoholism. Unfortunately, even with treatment, some alcoholics regress back to their old habits.

People who suffer from anxiety/depression are more likely to become addicted to alcohol. This substance helps them to lower their inhibition and in a sense is a replacement for much needed medication and/or therapy.

Alcoholism tends to develop over a long time. It is not uncommon for young adults to engage in binge drinking, and while this kind of drinking isn't necessarily one of the alcoholism signs and symptoms, it can be a sign of alcoholic tendencies in the future.

Alcoholics can reach a point where they become obsessed with alcohol to the extent that they neglect other life activities such as associating with family members, friends or business associates.

The alcoholic can also reach a state of alcohol dependency in which he/she is almost always inebriated. This is a particularly dangerous stage and certainly warrants immediate attention and treatment.

It is important to remember that an alcoholic's mental and physical health can suffer just because of the addiction itself. Mistakes can be made such as forgetting to put a cigarette out before going to sleep.

Alcoholics have died in this way, being too inebriated to remember to extinguish a cigarette. Driving while intoxicated resulting in accidents or falling down and injuring or even killing oneself can be the result of too much alcohol.

While one drink for women and two drinks for men per day is an acceptable amount of alcohol, more drinking can cause organ damage over time. It is not uncommon for alcoholics to suffer from alcoholism signs and symptoms such as having gallstones, having kidney problems and in more extreme cases, liver cirrhosis.

If you notice one or more of the alcoholism signs and symptoms and feel that drinking is now or is becoming a concern, you can find resources to help with alcoholism and its consequences.
